The citizens of Manhattan, especially the ones who have lived here for many years, have seen flooding as a problem. I decided to aim my focus at highlighting the positive aspects of floods while also educating the public about this topic. Through education, people can start to see this issue that has been so negative in their lives as a positive asset. In remediating the negative aspects of floods, the goals will be taken and implemented in a systems-based approach. This approach will aim to preserve and strengthen ecosystems that act as natural channels, implement parks and open spaces that let water flow through safely, and use green infrastructure systems that cleanse and absorb flood water. By implementing these goals, the citizens of Manhattan will have an outdoor space that can still be utilized when water levels rise and will help people understand that floods can bring positivity.

This section shows the tiered layout of the walking paths, with native grass plantings in-between that can take on high amounts of water.

Through education and art, users will be able to further understand the history of the site, reasons for flooding, and the aspects of floods. Large scale drift wood sculptures will be placed in this area, and if water levels reach this height, the drift wood can safely return to the river. Appropriate signage will be placed throughout this area and the site to give the users better knowledge of this topic.

The Boulder Beach provides a more natural user experience with the water. Ecosystems grow and strengthen in-between rock groupings, all thanks to floods. Users can get up close and personal with these ecosystems and physically see the positive aspects of flooding at work. The rising and lowering of the water levels will also provide a new experience and landscape each time the user visits the site.
